Sheryl Dutton is a self-taught American singer-songwriter born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on January 10, 1979. She has been composing her own unique blend of indie rock music for over twenty years.
Sheryl immersed herself in music from an early age and was influenced by her grandfather, a pianist and singer who performed at local nightclubs. Around the age of five, she took an interest in her mother’s eight track and record collection. That was the start of a life long interest in music, especially singing. At the age of 15 Sheryl got her first electric guitar and amplifier. She taught herself how to play and began writing her own lyrics. Her style was shaped by bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, The Doors, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, PJ Harvey, Bjork, The Pixies and Radiohead. In her teens, she played as a street performer in South Florida and onstage at open mic nights. She performed live as a member of an artists collective in high school and as part of art installations in college. She received much attention for her unique voice and singing style.
Sheryl met artist and musician Alain Ramos in 1997 while attending art school in Atlanta, GA. They quickly found much in common and started recording original songs on a 12-track from home. In 1999 Sheryl and Alain moved to Miami with the motivation to build a home recording studio and record their own music professionally. They married in 2003 and welcomed two sons that year. Sheryl currently works as a Permaculture Designer and a subsistence farmer in Homestead, FL. She continues to create fine art and teaches art to children. All areas of her life inspire song.
Sheryl pulls from a deep well of creativity and interests spanning visual art, design, writing and music. Her style of music is somewhat dark, melancholic yet uplifting. Her lyrics and harmonies trace the path of struggle, empowerment and self-love. Her songs tell a story of a world seen through the eyes of an artist and naturalist. Live performances are a rarity, as Sheryl spends her energy writing and recording, mostly playing live for family and friends.
Sheryl Dutton’s debut album Waves was released by Redland Records on August 10, 2014.
